Dr. Jesse Berry

Retinoblastoma

About Me:

I am a Professor of Ophthalmology, Clinical Scholar, and Director of Ocular Oncology at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and the University of Southern California (USC). My clinical expertise is in ocular oncology with a specific focus on the management of adults with uveal melanoma and children with retinoblastoma, both primary cancers of the eye. My research is now focused on the development of a liquid biopsy platform using the aqueous humor (AH), the clear fluid in front of the eye, for ocular cancers, including pediatric retinoblastoma and adult uveal melanoma. I have also mentored multiple students and post-doctoral scholars and actively collaborate with other researchers in and out of my institution. I plan to continue to devote my academic career to the care and study of rare ocular cancers and to be a leader in the field of Ocular Oncology, promoting molecular diagnostics and a precision medicine approach to therapy, as has been done in the broader field of oncology.

Why did you want to become a Cybersight Mentor?

Retinoblastoma is a rare disease; diagnosis and management are based on clinical evaluation and imaging, yet this can be very difficult to do well when someone only sees 1-2 cases (or less!) a year. As a Cybersight Mentor, I hope to bridge that gap by bringing my knowledge and expertise to the education of others who are caring for patients with these very rare, yet aggressive, ocular malignancies.
