About Me:

M. Edward Wilson, MD, is a Distinguished University Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics with Tenure at the Albert Florens Storm Eye Institute, Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Charleston, S.C. He is also the Emeritus Department Chair of Ophthalmology at MUSC and Emeritus Director of the Storm Eye Institute (1996-2011). He holds the N. Edgar Miles Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology. He has been elected to several prestigious societies and groups, including the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society, the Association for Research in Strabismus (the Squint Club), the International Intraocular Implant Club (IIIC), and the American Ophthalmological Society (AOS). He served for 5 years on the AOS Council and subsequently as the AOS President in 2018-2019. DR. Wilson received the 2024 Outstanding Humanitarian Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Inaugural Humanitarian Award earlier in 2024 from the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus. He received the MUSC Distinguished Faculty Service Award in 2025. Dr. Wilson has received a Life Achievement Honor Award from both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, where he is also Past President. He has been awarded the Marshall M. Parks medal from the Children’s Eye Foundation and the Claud Worth Medal from the British Isles Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus Association. Dr. Wilson served as an Executive Editor of the American Journal of Ophthalmology. He has written or contributed to 25 books, including his textbook on Pediatric Cataract Surgery, 1st and 2nd editions. It was also published in a Spanish translation. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles. He has given 800+ invited national and international presentations. In 2025, ScholarGPS recognized him as a Highly Ranked Scholar – Lifetime in pediatric ophthalmology in recognition of exceptional productivity, noteworthy impact, and quality of scholarly work in the top 0.05% of scholars in the Specialty worldwide. He has delivered 25 named lectures, including the Frank Costenbader lecture (at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus), the Claud Worth lecture (at the Annual Meeting of the British Isles Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus Association), and the Marshall Parks lecture (at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology).
