While a 6th layer of the cornea, the pre-Descemet’s layer or Dua’s layer, was reported in 2013, its existence as a wholly distinct layer has not been without controversy. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23714320/
At the time of this writing, the most recent update (2021-22) of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Basic and Clinical Science Course (BCSC) Volume 8: Corneal and External Disease still teaches that the cornea has 5 official layers.

The cornea has a new layer the Dua’s layer. Between stroma and Descemets membrane. So as per this it has to be 6 layers. So probably the answer to the first question might change.
